Wai Teng is a Partner in the Intellectual Property (IP) Practice Group.
Wai Teng's practice focuses on all aspects of intellectual property. She assists clients in developing, protecting, commercialising, managing and enforcing all forms of IP rights. Wai Teng is experienced in IP management and protection matters and has assisted international and multinational corporations in managing their local and global IP portfolios. Wai Teng’s experience includes IP prosecution and opposition proceedings, advising and implementing IP protection strategies and policies, as well as advising on contentious IP disputes relating to infringement and invalidation. She is involved in transactional IP matters and has knowledge in conducting IP audits and due diligence, advising on the IP aspects of M&A transactions, and assisting with the transfer of IPs.
Her experience extends to a wide range of commercial matters covering franchising and licensing, distribution, consumer protection, advertising, media and technology and regulatory compliance. Wai Teng advises clients on franchising and licensing matters in Malaysia and has assisted numerous clients in securing franchise approvals in Malaysia. She also provides commercial and strategic advice on matters relating to marketing and advertising laws, manufacturing and supply agreements, service agreements and product registrations.
Wai Teng has served clients in diverse industries, such as businesses in the automotive, aviation, education, energy, financial services, healthcare, hospitality, media and entertainment, retail and consumer, technology and telecommunications sectors.
Wai Teng is conversant in Malay, Cantonese and Mandarin. A graduate of law from the University of Reading, she has been admitted to practise law as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya since 2013.
Assisting one of the largest security seal manufacturers in managing its global trademark and patent portfolio by ensuring that the trademarks remain registered worldwide.
Represented clients in trademark hearings and opposition proceedings before the Registrar of Trademarks in Malaysia.
Assisted a UK-based sports and apparel business in successfully expunging a third-party trademark registration on the grounds of non-use, and securing trademark protection for the client in Malaysia, enabling the client to expand its business presence in Malaysia.
Assisted institutions on the IP aspects of corporate due diligence and assisted with post-acquisition IP assignments and licensing agreements, as well as coordinated multi-jurisdictional IP due diligence projects.
Assisted one of Malaysia’s largest telecommunications companies in developing and implementing IP policies for the corporation.
Assisted several renowned food and beverage companies and luxury retail companies in negotiating franchise and licence agreements, and securing rights to franchise its business in Malaysia.
Assisted multinationals in the consumer goods and food industries on a broad spectrum of matters, including advising on commercial agreements, consumer protection, data privacy, regulatory matters, advertising and marketing issues, policies and compliance.
Assisted and advised multinational and local companies on a wide range of commercial agreements including distributorship agreements, supply agreements, non-disclosure agreements, confidentiality agreements, licensing agreements and services agreements.
Assisted several multinational companies on domain name disputes.
Advised various local and multinational companies on copyright and trademark licensing issues in various arrangements including software, film and domain name licensing.
Assisted in enforcement concerning anti-counterfeiting and enforcement of IP rights for physical and online marketplace.
Advised various multinational and local companies in relation to due diligence exercises in merger and acquisition transactions on various IP development, acquisition and protection issues.
